Recently, I got a bunch of spare parts from a friend. He gave me an ECS K7VMM+ mainboard. An Athlon XP 1700 processor. An optical and floppy drive. And a power supply and case.
I already have a Western Digital 80gig harddrive for it. What I don't have is memory. What type of memory do I need? The mobo has 2 DDR DIMMS, supporting DDR266 and DDR 200. It also has 2 SDRAM DIMMS, supporting PC133 and PC100. I'll assume I should use DDR ram. What does the 266/200 spec mean? When I looked online at some memory sticks, I noticed they call some PC2700, PC 3200, etc. What exactly does that mean and which do I need?

btw... If anyone has a link to a site that could explain the whole system memory structure in detail It would be much appreciated.

PC2100 aka DDR 266MHz should be fine with that board and your CPU. Run them at 133/266 DDR (bios would probably say 133/133)
PC1600=200MHz
PC2100=266MHz
PC2700=333MHz
PC3200=400MHz etc. etc. etc.
p.s. it's a Via KM266 chipset board..not exactly high performance

Where does the math come from that translates to these numbers, as far as the PC1600=200mhz, PC2100=266, etc.?
also, I know it's not a high performance board/chipset. But it will be perfect for internet, business apps, and my personal ftp server. http://www.audioforums.com/forums/biggrin.gif

the 1600 and 2100 refer to the maximum theoretical pci bandwidth with that memory
i.e. 200 mHz fsb= 1.6 Gig/sec bandwidth
266 mHz fsb= 2.1 Gig/sec bandwidth

8 Bytes (bus width) x 2 (ddr) x 100000000Hz (FSB speed) = 1600 megabytes per second (MBps) or 1.6 gigabytes per second (GBps)
The same for PC2100 8 Bytes x 2 x 133mhz= 2.13GBps
And so one.
The wrench in the machine is an asynchronous FSB were the memory clock can run faster then the FSB.

If your going to get RAM get DDR333 it will simply clock down to 266.
This way when you realize you want a better motherboard that supports faster ram your not stuck with DDR266.
Kingston is a very prefered drand and not that much more than the generic.
Remember you should not cheat on ram or your system will suck and crash or hang all the time.
Many of the problems I have seen are due to bad or cheap ram, or a combo or different ram types.
