Monitoring

Hi, I am using Cubase VST 5.1 on Windows XP and I was wondering if someone could help me regarding monitoring. I have an Audiowerk 8 card and want to just "leave" the monitoring on one channel. So I click on "in" on the mixer and I hear my monitoring but when I select a MIDI or audio track in the arrange window, the monitoring switches off. Am I doing something wrong?
