You might wish to check that your IDE interfaces are using DMA and not PIO for accessing the hard disk. PIO mode was causing lots of latency, skipping and other unpleasantness on my Athlon 1.4gHz rig. Made the thing act like a P133 on a good day. Meanwhile on the PII-300 CEP was smokin! Not sure why PIO would be an issue, but once I got the IDE interfaces set to use DMA for the HD's CEP's performance on the Athlon became absolutely incredible.
Hope that helps...

Hmmm...for those of us who are less than fully computer-savvy, what are DMA and PIO?
Do we try to fumigate against them, ignore them or fight them. I'm just happy this machine works...I leave the complicated stuff to my engineer.

Sorry it took so long to respond... I remember typing this answer some time ago, but apparently I (or the internet) had a brain cramp. Anyway...to answer Bob's question about the acronyms... DMA = Direct Memory Access - allows hardware to access memory directly without going through the CPU... helps speed up processing.
PIO = Programmed I/O - not entirely sure what it does, but hard drives operate slower in this mode.
