View Full Version : different types of WAVS?

I use CEP and Samplitude Master. Before I describe my problem, let me say that my system is in dire need of a reformat and clean install. I just finished extracting all that is not audio related (printers, scanner, modem etc.) and moved it over to my wife's computer.

Basically what has been happening is that one or both of my apps get confused, sometimes, with the wav files I try to load in to listen and edit. Seems they aren't reading the header information correctly? when you save a wav you can select the options box and choose from a variety of formats: 16.8 float IEEE, 24 bit packed int, or normalized float.... there are six different types.

Well, when I open the wav in Samplitude, it doesn't look like a wav because it is a SOLID block of color, meaning that the file is corrupted or unable to be opened. I tried playing a little bit (What the hell was I thinking?!!!) and needless to say that my Genelecs were not too happy with the signal. The voice coils are okay though...

When I try to open up the wav in CEP (the same wav that played perfectly the day before) I get what looks like the correct wav graphical info but when I tried to play it (with my monitors turned completely down!) the level meters just peg full tilt like in Samplitude. This morning when I tried to play that very wav, it sounded just fine.....Luckily I stopped pulling what little hair I have left out and decided to seek some help.

My thoughts are these: Either there is a comlatibility issue with opening a wav in CEP and Samplitude and the header info just gets altered as to make the data useless. Or my system (i.e. OS) is completely confused and needs to be formatted back to health.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, this is a real sore point with me! The solution is to save the file as type 3 32 bit, not the default CEP type 1. Both proggies like this fine. Incidently, when Samplitude messes with the file, it's seriously amplifying it, so if you analyze it in CEP, you can see how much it's been amplified and reduce it accordingly to recover it.

Hi resistor.

well, the problem comes from CEP and not from Samplitude. I donīt use CEP, but any other wave file that I create in Nuendo, Cubase, Logic, Wavelab, Sound Forge; any rip from CDs. etc, etc, can be open greatly in Samplitude without any single problem. Not only the CD Standard waves, but any other type of wave(compressed, etc) can be open easily in Samp.

I posted an answer for him as well in Sekd Forum to make some tests.

The 32-bit (16.8 float) is a propriety CEP format. Just make the CEP default the type 3 and don't use the other. CEP works just fine with type 3 but you won't be able to use .pk files for them.

beetle, the .pk files do actually work for type 3...
