View Full Version : Using CEP as external editor in Cubase and Calkwalk

Hello!
I've been using CEPv1.2 for a year or so and find it does everything I want (which is pretty basic - wish I knew what all that scientific stuff was for!) and it's easy and intuitive to understand as well. I've not come across another audio editor to touch it so - big fan!
Problem is I do a lot with midi too and want to use CEP as the external editor with sequencers. Up 'til now I've used Cubase 3.7 exclusively and when I want to edit audio... up pops CEP but it can't find the file. There are ways round this of course, but it's tedious and time consuming and interupts the flow. Am I missing something very obvious in my ignorance? It's quite possible...
Recently I've begun a collaboration with a friend who dislikes Cubase, so I'm auditioning Cakewalk Pro Audio 8.0 and according to the CEP help, CEP should integrate and appear on the Tools menu in the sequencer - but it doesn't. Sound Forge XP does, and so does Creative Wave Studio (and Jammer Pro) we've discovered, but not CEP. So someone pointed me at this site and here I am. Any suggestions? Or should I try the Cakewalk forum?
I've been thru the topics and find a brief thread beginning 12-19-2000 05:09 PM where winered refers to "A neat utility called cub2for3..." and I've been looking for that in the hope it might help re: the Cubase problem - but couldn't find it. Also some hints that I'll follow up when I reinstall Cubase.
But it's the Cakewalk thing that's bugging me 'cos it ought to just be there...
Nice to have found this site tho' - keep up the good work!

I think I remember reading that this was some problem in Cakewalk's newer versions, and you might have to install CEP after Cakewalk so Cake will see it and put it in the Tools menu. Maybe just try running the CEP installer again??

Buckwheat is right, you may need to run the CEP install again. Otherwise, there is a registry hack you can do to force CEP onto the tools menu. Do a search on the forums for CEP, Cakewalk, and Tools menu, something should come up as it's been posted several times. If you can't find it let us know and we'll help you find it.
Good luck.

Believe me I've installed and uninstalled and reinstalled every which way but it just don't help! Also tried taking out everything I can think of that might be getting in the way...
So I'm off to look for this registry hack. Thanks for the pointer. Will let you know how I get on.

Try this link to the Registry Hack (http://www.audioforums.com/forums/Forum9/HTML/000133.html) for adding to the tools menu.
Good luck.

Absolutely bloody brilliant! Works like a dream and I learned a whole lot in the process. My thanks to you both and to Subsonicwaves for the hack.
Now if I can just get it working in Cubase...

I totally understand where you are coming from with this. Apologies to other forum regulars for repeating this little chunk but like you I dislike the way Cubase VSt 'sounds' and for me the solution appeared to be to slave CEP to Cubase via MTC or SMPTE. Unfortunately I found many problems including greatly increased latency and program instability. So now I simply record synth or module parts 'live' into CEP as if CEP were a big tape recorder. It's klunky but in the absence of any other workaraound.....
The cub2for3 applet enhances the way Cubase relates to external audio processing program, specifically CEP. On top of adding segmentation markers to the Cubase wav it is also supposed to force Cubase to drop its hook on the audio channels so allowing CEP to play while Cubase is in the background. I believe it's available at download.com. Any problems post here and I'll point it out for you...
I personally couldn't get on with Cakewalk after using the trial version for the demo period. I'm a long time CEP fan but like you need to sequence to MIDI, not anything special just sequences and quantise. It's my hope that CEP2.0 will incorporate some MIDI sequencing.
Good luck

PS (...up front 'cos I've just read winered's posting coming in to post the below (which is really just an e-mail to me mate - and anybody else who's as ignorant as we are!))... burble burble blah blah insecure defensive drivel deleted
Stay Cool
End of PS...
This hack so delighted me that I immediately sent it to me mate (another fairly intelligent old fart same as me) and he just replied saying he couldn't make head nor tail of it - well! I'd sat scratching me head and reading helps and manuals for an hour and a half before I dare have a go. So just in case there are any more of us out there this is what I did:-
Here's the hack
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu\Cool Edit]
"Type"="WaveEditor"
"ExePath"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\Cool Edit Pro\\coolpro.exe"
"HelpFilePath"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\Cool Edit Pro\\coolpro.hlp"
"MenuText"="Cool Edit &Pro"
"StatusBarText"="Edit the selected audio event using Cool Edit Pro 1.2"
That was the Hack.
What Subsonicwaves is saying is:
COPY the hack (REGEDIT4... ) into Windows Note Pad
and where it says
PROGRAM FILES\\Cool Edit Pro\\
substitute EXACTLY
- the path to wherever you've got CEP on your hard drive
(...BUT:
what I did ('cos I'm not exactly sure what \\ means) was go into Windows Explorer, to Program Files, created a folder, and called it 'Cool Edit Pro'...
...then reinstalled CEP, browsing to the folder I'd just created...)
- and then (I think I did it this way round - sometimes you can't quite remember can you?) saved the Note Pad into the Cakewalk Pro Audio folder calling it:
coolpro.reg
- and then (in explorer or something) double click on the file
- and you get asked whether you REALLY want to do this...
- YES (!!!)
Then restart Cakewalk and there it is!

Spiny,
Re-reading my post - yeah, sorry - far too much technoburble. Congrats with your registry editing. Just FYI, regarding the \\Cool Edit Pro\\ notation. Usually this simply means "insert your path here". eg; c:\coolpro.
Re, Cubase. Better the devil you know I suppose, which is how come I still have Cubase installed on my PC. Here's looking forward to CEP 2.0!

...and looking back at mine I see I was back from the pub and being a bit alcoholoqacious - sorry about that.
I been looking for cub2for3 but not having much luck. Can you help?

Just out of interest - my mate passed the hack on to someone else using exactly the same combination of programs and he said:
What for? it does it anyway
Reason being he installed Cake, then a demo of cool (different version) and then CEP (...so the demo had done the hack for him!)
(... I think! lemme know if I misunderstood that OK?)
And many thanks to winered who sent me the cub2for3 applet - so: all sorted then!

The hack works good. Just for others trying this, I am using Windows 98, Cakewalk Pro 7.
I wanted to use Acoustica as an editor so I did this:
ran Regedit
created these keys exactly(I tried not using the Cool Edit key but no luck)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu\Cool Edit]
create the following strings for this key
(note that I had to have the path as a single \ not \\)
Type="WaveEditor"
ExePath="C:\PROGRAM FILES\Acoustica\acoustica.exe"
HelpFilePath="C:\PROGRAM FILES\Acoustica\acoustica.cmh"
MenuText="Acoustica"
StatusBarText="Acoustica"
ALL of the entries must be there, I tried only using 3 of them at first. You can change the file locations and text of course.

I have a reg key you can just merge that may do the trick for you if you want it. It's at my site in The File Chamber (http://dssultan.artistcollaboration.com) and is for Windows 98. If you have any trouble just let me know, this reg key assumes that CEP is installed in the DEFAULT path. Otherside the path needs to be edited prior to merging.
Good luck.
