who use Cool Edit and W2K (or are thinking of upgrading soon).

Cool Edit uses MME drivers. It seems that M-Audio's MME drivers only support 16-bit recording with W2K. So far I have not tested this myself, but am planning on doing so this evening. The point is, forums like this one are a great resource for researching products before you buy them, and I'm sure if this issue was highlighted a little better it might encourage M-Audio to step up their driver development a little (not to mention answer their emails).

I am going to post a similar thread in a few forums and notify M-Audio of the existance and content of the threads.

If I am mistaken about this I apologise to all involved, but I did request clarification from M-Audio and have had no response, and I have read a post on the Synt site by a guy who did have a response to the effect that they do not know when the MME drivers will be updated to support 24-bit recording. So I have to go back to '98 ?

Anyway, I am going to test it properly tonight or tommorow and post the results.

Anyway, I'd love to be proved wrong on this, but if I'm not, please post your opinion and give M-Audio something to think about.

Thanks,

Nathan.

I have a Delta 44 and am building a Pentium 4 system with Window XP.
Last year I had just built a P3 system and loaded Win2000 but found out that the Delta needed WDM drivers in order to work with Win 2000, which they didn't have yet. Now they do, but your post makes me realize that maybe Cool Edit wouldn't support WDM drivers.
I don't know about the MME drivers and if they support Win2000 (or WinXP).
I'll look into this whole thing and will post back when I find out more.

Basically at the current moment it breaks down something like this...

M-Audio Delta Drivers for Win2K/XP:
support 24bit with ASIO and WDM, but are limited to 16bit with MME...

Cool Edit Pro:
supports 24bit with MME, and can use WDM drivers but is limited to 16bit with WDM...

So basically either way you look at it, you have to record in 16bit with CEP and a Delta card for the time being...

As for whether to go back to win98 or not is completely up to you... I am choosing to stay with win2K and wait for an upgrade in drivers support from M-Audio (hopefully soon). Reason being?? Stability... after running audio program in win2K and then realizing I was only actually recording in 16bit, I attempted to go back to win9x but after about a day I wiped out my win9x installation and went back to 2K... To me, the stability difference between win2K/XP and a win9x installation is quite noticable and after being used to the stability of win2k, I just can't go back to any previous windows versions... Again it is completely up to you... this was the conclusion I came to after having tested the same system on both OSes... There are many people who will fight for win98SE to the death and I have to question whether or not those people have actually tested a properly configured Win2K on their machines... reason being that from what I see, the majority of people who have run win98SE and then switched to win2K, have stayed at win2K and like me, refuse to look back... Anyways completely up to you...

peace

Thanks jdechant,
I would agree about the stability issue, and would pick W2K any day. The best solution for me turned out to be a temporary dual-boot situation, with '98 configured for just Audio, and W2K for everything else.

But just to clarify in case anybody is in the same situation...Delta do provide MME drivers for '98 that support 24 bit.
