View Full Version : Click-pop after mixing two tracks - Help

After having recorded two tracks and verified good clean recordings, I have mixed down. At 2 min/35 sec. there is a loud click pop (sounds like that if you say it fast) equal and the same on both left and right channels. I have tried several times with various settings and conversions (32 bit - 16 bit) to remixdown but get the exact same noise at the exact same time. It is intense enough that CEP 1.2a can't seem to remove them with it's filter. (Or at least I haven't found the right settings to do so)
One track was recorded mono then converted to stereo - the other recorded stereo and added to the mix.
I searched for clicks and pops but only found the posts regarding cd tracks. Not the same thing I think. Please help if you can.
Thanks

Was there any cutting\pasting done with either of the tracks ? One thing that can cause the noise you describe is 'non-zero crossing'. An example of this would be if you join two waveforms together and the end of the first waveform is above the centre line and the beginning of the second one is below it. What does this make your speakers try and do ? I'll give you the answer posted by someone alot more knowlegable than me on another forum :
Defy the laws of physics!
1) Waveform graph goes up, speaker moves forwards.
2)Waveform graph goes down, speaker moves backwards. Speaker generally follows smooth changes in waveform quite well.
3)Waveform jumps instantaneously from one value to another, speaker cone attempts to rip itself out of mountings by accelerating at infinite speed from one position to another in zero time... and you wonder why it pops?

Actually, having reread your message, this doesn't seem to be the problem here. Can you expand on your mixdown setup, and if both tracks were definately non-popping before mixdown.

Thanks pAp for giving it a go. I moved the two original wav files around (into the same directory, as they were not previously - gotta be careful where session saves actually put your files) then did another mixdown and this time the click/pop is not there. The two unmixed tracks were definately without any clicks, pops, cuts/pastes or punch-ins. Guess it's the weather or something.
As far as the mixdown setup - I'd have to scratch my head trying to tell you what you have asked for. I'm kinda new. Perhaps I'll just keep your helping generosity in reserve for my next problem. I'm sure there will be one.

Yeah that is weird...I way I worded that question about your 'mixdown setup' was misleading, I just meant to ask were you mixing down in 32 bit\16bit\mono\stereo, and whether the mono tack that you converted to stereo was converted at this stage or beforehand.
I can't understand how moving the files into the same directory could eliminate unwanted noise...but if it works...gift horses and all that... http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif
