View Full Version : Absence of Evidence

I know that absence of evidence should not taken to imply evidence of absence but I have seen no evidence whatsoever that there really is a CEP 2.0 in the works or even a 1.3 for that matter. Has anyone or is this just our wishfull presumption?

There is a very capable and professional new generation of DAW software out there whose appeal is becoming irresistable to me in the absence of any indication that there is a reason to wait for something from Syntrillium. Once I take that leap, and it's getting to look that I will sooner than later, there will be no looking back.

C'mon, Synt, gimme some small reason to wait.

I second that! I don't see the need to be so secretive about it. Sure they'll want to keep features under wraps, but if they had something worth waiting for, wouldn't they at least be saying "coming soon"? What harm would that do? There are other programs out there.

Agreed. Some people seem to think that Synt will unveil the be all killer DAW which is worth the wait. The peoblem is that their product is not stacking up as well while we are waiting.... and that has been a long time.

Cool Edit Pro 1.0 was introduced in September of 1997 since then Sytrillum has done little but to offer a few bug fixes and to part out bits and pieces of CEP to CE96 and CE2000 users for $49 a chunk.

I think somebody needs to go knock on thier door just to make sure if they are ok in there. Hello? HELLO? Excuse me but are there any programers in there?

Like a Star Trek episode I think they have all been turned into piles of white powder or maybe small cubes with possibly one or two survivors from corporate still selling the old wares.

All kidding aside, Cool Edit is a great platform but Syntrillium needs to do something SOON! Real time effects and mixing is now fully a requirement of a multitrack recording program and CEP is being left in the dust by even N-Track's software. I will keep CEP as a two track editor but once I drop a couple hundred or more on Samplitude or whatever I'm probably not going to go back to CEP if and when they get around to properly updating things.

This is unfortunate as I really like CEP and the addition of a mixer and real time effects to what is already there (please don't screw up the simplicity and workabilty of the original parts) would probably be an upgrade that I would be willing to pay for.

I know what your saying guys. I love CEP and am a die hard but due to demands and lack of anything from Syntrillium we had to purchase Nuendo over the Holidays. Like others here I still use it for editing but it is being left behind. I felt guilty about getting another program that was 5 times the cost but Syntrillium left us no choice.

Hmmm... I also question the decision to be so silent regarding a new version. Seems like they are a tiny little company and who could expect them to compete with someone like Steinberg, but nothing since '97? Wow. Checking their web page under "What's New" doesn't exactly inspire confidence - last update was Nov '00. I think the time has come for all the die-hards to let it go and move on. It was a great product for it's time but the competition is too much now and the features are really dated. Honestly guys don't you think you've waited long enough? I mean do you seriously expect this new release to come close to what VST/SONAR/LOGIC presently offer? Yes even the N-tracks has progressed into this century but CEP hasn't. To make any dent in the DAW world they will have to offer at least something comparable at a lower price. Many of these smaller companies will be weeded out just like gadget labs. There are too many of them and the initial DAW buzz is slowing. It's like a mini-dot.com fall out about to occur. Sad to see the little guys go down but such is life. Perhaps Syntrillium spread themselves too thin with some of their other products like that rediculous screen saver. Not sure who is in charge of their marketing strategy with products like Snoqualmie, Windchimes, and Kaleidoscope. How much income could those possibly have generated? They should have been hammering away on improving their flagship product.

I myself am waiting to purchase Sonar - just want to let other people find the bugs in the first few releases and patches and see how all this WDM driver stuff pans out. Also not sure how Win XP is going to rock the boat. Going to wait for the price to drop just a tad too. It's sad to see the little guys go down but such is life - survival of the fittest.

Hey, Snoqualmie is pretty cool! It's no CEP update, but it's still pretty cool.

I've kept pretty quiet on this matter, but here's my 2 cents:
I couldn't wait any longer for a so called update - if one is even in the works. I still use CEP for producing a radio show and 2-track editing, but for band/music productions, I had to move on last winter. For as long as it took to update 1.2 to 1.2a that was IMO a joke, and to still be waiting another year is totally rediculious. Keeping silent with their diehard users didn't score any points in my book, other companies have added features I need, so is CEP really going to amaze us with features unheard of by the other programs to justify complete silence? Maybe if they're working with alien technology in some underground base!
If so, I want telepathic interface to bypass mouse/keyboard in 2.0!
I'm not into bashing on them, even though I lost a great deal of respect towards them. I just needed different tools to get things done more efficiently. Life goes on...

Well, if you have to move on to other programs because of features CEP doesn't have, there's not much of an argument to be made. You gotta do what you gotta do.

But as for saying that Syn must be dead because they aren't saying anything, how about that call for beta testers? Of course you havn't heard anything else...all of the beta testers would be under nondisclosure agreements! I figure that if they started beta testing a month or two ago, we should be getting pretty close to seeing something new. If not, well, 1.2a is still doing what I *need*...although some real time EQ in multitrack would be nice...

If I was a betin' man I'd say that "new member Bill" is a beta tester trying to ease our frustration, or works for Syntrillium. http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

I'm starting to get really excited!!!

I e-mailed Syntrillium about the lack of new info on their "What's New" section of their site. Thought I'd pass this on:

We are working on 2.0, so we are very busy and since it's a very large project, we have not released anything else. That is why
there is nothing in the "What's New" area.

Thanks for that. Bob Ellison's response is just the warm fuzzy I was looking for. Nobody gives details and having been a software/firmware developer for 35 years I fully understand the reticence relative to schedules. So, I for one will wait.

BTW, was Bob the original Cool Edit developer? I heard it was one man's work and have long felt that that produces superior coherence in a design if the designer is reasonably gifted. Coherence is the signature trait of Cool Edit.

This is copied from the program's "About" section about the creator of Cool Edit:

David Johnston has been working with sound technology since 1991, and has been toying with electronic synthesizers since the 70's. He started programming while in high school on a Commodore PET computer. In 1982, he started his programming career on an Atari 800; and has since written software for Apple ]['s, Commodore 64's, Macintoshes, PC-compatible computers, and numerous mainframes and workstations.
David attended Eastern Montana College for two years before moving to the Seattle area, where in 1991 he acquired a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Washington. He worked as a software engineer for several years at Microsoft, both during and after finishing college. In his spare time, he wrote programs for the challenge and fun of it. Two of those applications, Cool*Edit and Kaleidoscope, went on to become some of the most popular shareware programs available.

In 1995, David Johnston and Bob Ellison co-founded Syntrillium Software Corporation to enhance and market Cool*Edit, Kaleidoscope, and other products. David now devotes all his programming energies toward creating the most powerful and easy-to-use software products around, with special emphasis on applications that work with sound. In 1996, he created Wind Chimes, which simulates the sound of real wind chimes on the computer. You can find more about Syntrillium and its products on the web at http://www.syntrillium.com.

Yeah, it was shareware up 'til then... direct from David Johnston. Think I downloaded it in 94 from AOL.

I could have swor I saw aa Amiga 500 demo tape some 16 years or so ago that featured a program called "Cool Edit" could this be the same program we all use and love?
