Event Monitors

I have two Project Studio 5 monitors. I use them for a home studio set up I have on a Mac. I have them connected directly to the Macs audio output. Is this the best way to use them? Should the Mac go to a power amp first? Should I have a mixer between the Mac and the monitors? If so what equipment can anyone suggest?

That'll work fine.

The monitors are powered so an amp is not only not needed, but could damage the monitors if you try to stick a high level signal into them.

A mixer is handy for a easy volume control, but adds more to the signal path. More stuff in the signal path = more noise and distortion (even if only a little).
