I am looking for an inexpensive outboard compressor for recording to my DAW - mostly vocals, but also acoustic instruments like clarinet and anything I can get my hands on to make som noise. I've been looking at an Alesis 3630, but what do you all think?

the RNC 1773 Compressor. It is about $180USD. I use it for tracking on all sorts of things, it is very good. Look up comments on rec.audio.pro newsgroup.
good luck,

The RNC has the 3630 beat by a long mile. Get the RNC and be happy.

- ....happy and poor. http://www.audioforums.com/forums/wink.gif I would expect it to beat the 3630, but saving up for a while could probably be i wise idea.

I just got my RNC two days ago and am planning on wiring it into my master bus this weekend. I have been using a DBX compressor for many years and after all the great reviews decided to give the FMR unit a try.

Best to save up and get the RNC - it's never worth it to buy something 'just to get by' until you can afford the proper piece.
Bombastique and the rest of fine people in here,
What is your take on Focusrite Plat Voicemaster Pro? I've been using 1402 vlz pro with mxd 2200 (behringer)for some time now to track voices... but it just does not cut it anymore for me, so I need to graduate into something pro now.
My MIC's are Rode NT1000 and SM58.
Thanks

funny you should ask - i've been using one the last few weeks and think it's a really great piece. the saturator is really, really nice, though i still patch my rnc into the insert for compression, as it's still better than what's on the voicemaster. that's not to say the built in compressor is bad - it's actually quite good, much better than alot of stuff i've heard.
Thanks bombastique,
The thing is I don't have a place to go and check it out... so I relly on this forum for opinions/reviews. I just have to order it and if it does not cut it for me, hope I can return it for something different. But if you like it, that meens I would too, 'cause it is much better than per on 1402 vlz pro + comp MXD 2200 - right? But I might get RNC as well too, would not hurt to have it at my disposal as well.
Thanks,
AAF
