Hi

In a few months I'll be looking to buy a new synth, I have a Supernova rack so I am looking to get something reasonably high end which has great drums/orchestral/string/piano sounds. Plus more spacey/pad sounds Is there anything amazing out/about to come out that falls under this category that's not going to sound obsolete in a year or so. Or is the best way to go about this to stock up my sample library?

Ahhh, and some realitsic funky bass sounds!

For Orchestra and Strings, you're best bet is still samplers. The Gigastudio rocks in that respect. Halion and Kontakt will read Giga libraries, too - if you're looking for a VST softsampler...

If you insist on going hardware (still lots of good reasons) have a look at the Emu Virtuoso, or to include all those pads and basses aswell, why not an EMU Proteus 2000 or Xtreme lead with a Virtuoso expansion card?

what's this 'Motif' like then? or is this meant to be used more as a stand alone workstation?

By the way thanks for your previous replies!

I acknowledge the sampler route is a good one, but I'd prefer it all there in a box not adding to CPU strain.

The Emu sounds a little to close in it's range of sounds to an Alesis module I have and am a bit tired of (admittedly the EMU is much better sounding judging from some clips I just heard).

The Motif however look more like the kind of thing I am after, anyone have one, any comments?

If you're into Roland at all, you can't go wrong with the SR-JV80 orchestral board for the XP/JV series synths and modules. I just put one in my JV-90.....unbelieveable orchestral sounds!! Just my 2 cents.

Baz - do what we do, just buy a computer dedicated to the Gigastudio. $1500 gets you a mighty fine rig and doesn't add to CPU load.

The Motif is hot regarding great drums/orchestral/string/piano sounds. But bombastique has a good point, a dedicate Gigastudio could be the better deal, it just depends.

If you find the Motif of interest, I would really check out the Korg Karma. It is an incredible synth with Korgs flagship triton sound engine.

Motif is nice (probably better keys) but the sound and flexability of the Karma are awesome. Additionally, the creator of the KARMA technology moderates a very actice user group.

The KARMA technology is not pre-canned arpeggiations and motifs, it is a truly interactive experience with algorithmic generated effects.

That's what I was just thinking; those dedicated-modules are usually pretty steep $$, and software should be easier to upgrade, ?
