The TR8's & the 20/20bas are built on the same design. So yes the TR8's are basically the same monitor. In my opinion the TR8's look better. And yes the I've heard them in action, nice.
I also test them the other day against the new MidiMan BX8's and I bought the BX8's on the spot. But the TR8's are nice also. In my opinion you'll like either.
Take care & peace!

I can't compare, but I can tell you definitely DO NOT go with Event. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with. They are quite literally the most unfriendly, unprofessional, lousiest excuses for business people I have ever had the distinct displeasure to deal with. And that is only when I was able to actually get a hold of them because, you see, they have a habit of ignoring emails and not picking up their phones and of not calling you back even when you leave nice messages. I own a pair of TR8s and was thoroughly unimpressed. They aren't all that flat as they hype them to be. "Tuned"...HA! Yeah right. And one of my pair went kaput after only a year of moderate use. In fact, in my experience with the company, I would go so far as to say they are cheap toys by a fly-by-night scam company with a wretched customer support dept. who seem to have the same manufacturing strategy as most car companies...planned obsolesence. Do your research people! A good way to find out about a company is to get ahold of their service dept before buying their product. It's easy to do and you may just walk away with a better idea of whether or not you want to do business with the company. I didn't do this and now I regret it. I am out $500 dollars and I can't seem to get anyone at the company to answer their phones or their emails about a return authorization number. HORRIBLE company! BUYER BEWARE!!!

I have heard nothing but good reviews about the Event monitors.. I would be interested in knowing what the problem is with the pair Sonic Brat bought?
Was there a manufacturing defect or failure?
What was the problem with the monitors?

First off, let me just ask you this. When does anyone ever read a 'bad' review about equipment? I have subscribed to magazines like EQ, Home Recording, Recording, Electronic Musician, Keyboard, etc. over the years and have never once read a bad review on anything. It's bad for business. If a magazine or retailer reviews a product poorly, they either stop getting ad money from that company or lose money in sales. It's a totally rigged system. If anyone knows of a good source for 'honest' reviews untainted by greed, let me know please, because I read nothing but 'good' reviews of Event's products too.
Now, to answer your question, I bought my pair about 1 year ago and had up to now no problems whatsoever with the moderate use they got. Then lately one of my TR8s started distorting and dropping in volume. I thought it might be blown, but it only does this every once in awhile, not continuously. Now, I have noticed that on the occasions that it does behave in this way, that if I push the power button on the back in as if I am about to turn it off and hold it there, the problem goes away. Of course depressing the button however turns it off. Sometimes when I turn it back on it is fine again, other times I have to repeat this process a couple of times to get the thing to work right. And sometimes it never works right and I give up pissed off.
I have done all the troubleshooting: cables, inputs, outputs, soundcard, shielding, trim control, etc. it is definitely the TR8.
My main problem isn't so much with the TR8s themselves (they did serve me well for the past year). My problem is with the company. I emailed the tech support 3 times over a two week period with no reply. Then I sent an angry one to every email address on their site. Funny, the only one who emailed me back was the sales department and the guy's name was Mike JUNK! HA! He said he would forward my email to tech support for me. Finally I got an email from a guy ambiguously named 'Q' and he said I should request a Return Authorization #. He explained that I could email for it, but that it would be better to call. So I called....and called....and called. No one EVER answered the phone. I even called all the other departments (I was expecting to get ahold of someone in sales at least)....no luck. I left three messages concerning my problem and left my number for them to call me back each time. No one ever did. It's like they are all on a permanent vacation. Nobody home. So I am stuck with, in my opinion, an overrated piece of crap that for $250 should last longer than a year. I still own a 20 year old cheapo magnavox boom box whose speakers are still holding up!
What is the deal with Event? You call this good business practice?
Always do your homework.
