I'm in the process of building my new super silent PC and need some tips. It will be at least a P4 2.4GHz.
I need links for good/reputable suppliers of components such as silent power supplies, HDD's and other things such as Silent Drive enclosures.
Any other opinions/thoughts/suggestions are most welcome too.
Thanks in advance

I believe there is a company called quiet PC that builds quiet drive enclosures and fans. I think it is at quietpc.com but if not, just do a search for quiet PC equipment.

I just built a silent computer with the following parts:
P4 2.4
Asus P4PE Mobo
512MB Muskin PC 2700 RAM
Segate Baracuda IV 80GB
Generic ATX Tower Case
Nexus NX3000 Quiet Power Supply
Enermax Ultra Cool Case Fans w/thermal control (4 case, 1 CPU).
The Main components of noise are the power supply and fans.
Check out http://www.silentpcreview.com/ for a comparision of silent components.
The only noise I hear in my system is the CPU fan on which I disabled the thermo sensor so it runs full blast, while the others run low speed always. I'm thinkihg about adding a fan mate speed control to try and slow it down and quiet it but I'm uneasy about overheating the CPU.
As for a vendor I got everything from Newegg.com, free shipping on most items beats others prices almost everytime. The power supply was from siliconacoustics.com, only one I could find with the Nexus.
You'll be better off building an enclosure for the PC. I used a cedar chest that I could close the lid on (I had inside lined w/ foam). Worked far better than all the insane crap i did to my pc to make it quieter (silent fans, switches to run fans at 5volts, etc.). Do a search on my old postings for tips...

I bought a normal DELL-PC and that thing is unbelievable quit. It has two fans: one big in the hausing (no fan on the prozessor or on the grafics card!) and one in the power supply. Both fans are on slow motion and make nearly no noise!
Perhaps an idea for you?

Hi hellfo,
In addition to the other suggestions, you might want to check the small enclosures under the Shuttle brand name. They actually come as bare-bone systems and are very quiet because they use a cooling system other than straight fans. Check them out at: http://www.shuttle.com/
Best regards,
Scott

Your best bet is to let me build you a quiet box for $800.

Wow!!!! So many good suggestions. Thanks.
GZ Sound, I went to that site and it's very good. I'm about to order my PSU through them.
Mr. Scott, another excellent site. Thanks.
Paco, good suggestion, but i need to upgrade my PC anyway. Plus, its kind of a project (ie, to see how quiet I can get it). Effective yes, but not as much fun.
