I am interested in purchasing a midi controller and I have narrowed the field to the Roland PC300 and Evolution 249c.
They are both 49keys and they are comprable in price. So, my problem in deciding comes down to this. The Evolution has 12 assignable controller knobs, but average key action (i have been able to check this one out first hand, and i must say, the action is worse than my little yamaha beginners keyboard!). From what i've heard, the Roland has excellent key action (i haven't been able to find one to try out, but from the reviews i've read and the reputation and history of Roland, i can imagine the action is MUCH better than the Evolution's), but NO assignable knobs, although it does have one assignable slider (and i think an assignable modulator wheel as well). In addition, they both come with software. I have heard that the Evolution's software bundle is outdated, while the PC-300 comes with Cubasis A/V.
So i am in serious need of some advice. I am not sure how crucial having 12 assignable knobs is and i don't know if just having a slider and and wheel is enough. But the key action on the Evolution is really crappy (like pushing the buttons on those phones with the oversized number pads) and the software that the Roland controller comes with would be helpful (considering i don't have a funtional midi sequencer, unless you consider fruityloops...), but i don't know if i would get frustrated with having to reassign the slider everytime i wanted to tweak a different parameter.
Could anyone please give there advice on this subject? Do those that use midi controllers without lots of assignable knobs find that they wished they did?

thanks for your time,

I have used both extensively - yes, the Roland's action is better, BUT what are we talking about here? How critical is the 'action' on a keyboard like this? If it's important to you, then go for the Roland, though I daresay that, to me, the action isn't of primary importance - I could use either with equal success.

I think the price difference between the 2 would pay for a decent software sequencer, like Cubasis - and having those knobs can certainly come in handy....
