My band and I want to incorperate samples into our music. What would be the best device to accomplish this? We would need one that is transportable (preferly its own thing). Now I have Some V-drums. that might be helpfull to know. I know Roland makes a "groove box" it seems to be what im looking for. Am I on the right track for what i need? HELP! please were so wacked to get some samples going, our band will be complete with them. Thanks a million.

Get a decent sampler - Emu or Akai would probably be best....

I just bought an Akai S5000 from Guitar Center for $899.00 This machine is great. The best thing is you can install a USB card and operate it including edit samples and save them to your PC hard drives. I love this sampler and it is easy to use.
Of course you will need something to trigger the samples and possibly a sequencer.

Roland groove boxes don't play back custom made samples, just what comes preset in the machine. If you want to incorporate your own samples, say of a turntable or a vocal, than you need a dedicated sampler. Preferably one with pads so you can play the samples rhythmically from the machine.
The classic drum machine/sampler, which I see live bands and hip hop acts use, is the Akai MPC2000 which is around $1200 new, $900 used. The Ensoniq ASR-X is nice too, about $700 new. Conversely, you could buy a rackmount sampler, new or used, and use a MIDI keyboard to trigger the samples live.
I would personally stay the hell away from groove boxes and loop samplers though, they are made for people who lack creativity and don't write their own music.

I hate to say it, but don't bother with that Akai S2000 - it's an incredible pain in the arse to use and has very limited features and RAM (only up to 32mb...).
A better bet would be the low end Emu or even an Akai S5000. They're more expensive ($500 and up), but the features and ease of use more than make up for it...

Thanks, I know that a computer is the best thing in the world to get samples. But I need some thing i can take to shows. You know something peferly small and portable. A computer would be a pain in the naeck to have to set it up all the time. I need something thats "plug and play" like you know.
