Any recommendations for a relaible, easy to use sound module under $1000 that has terrific pads (ambient) and great orchestral sounds. I'm looking at the Proteus 2500 (possibly with the orch expansion card, and people seem to like the Roland 3080?

don't put too much stock in what other people say - you should check them out for yourself and decide. people talked about roland for strings, so i bought one and ended up not liking it. for strings, you really can't beat a good sampler, as you can always update the library rather than having to buy a new module. i use the EXS24 in logic as well as the NN19 in Reason - since they both load AKAI samples, there's tons of great string libraries out there...
