Hi, I'm a guitar player and I'm looking for a headphone to monitor my recordings. These recordings are made in PC with a SBLive. The problem is that it cannot be a PRO headphone since I'm bit broken and things here in Brazil sometimes cost 3x or 4x the price you pay in USA - especially after the WTC attack. So, the question is: what's the best headphone in the price range of US$50-US$100?
By "the best" I mean a headphone with a response as flat as possible with the capability to support "tons" of volume - or, at least, the best relationship among these factors.
Any help will be appreciated,
Felipe.

Well, I bought some Fostex T-40s on the advice of folks here, but you REALLY don't want to MIX with headphones, as they will give a very distorted version of your mix. Your mix will sound much, much better on 'phones than it will when played on any stereo -- which is how the final product will be played. Better to invest in some "near-field monitors". You want "active" (amplified) ones with, as you said, a flat frequency response. Good luck bro; I suspect you'll have to spend a little more than you were shooting for.

I agree... for that sort of budget go for sony's but just go to a shop and try a couple out to see which you like.

Another excellent choice would be the Sennheiser HD280. They're great sounding closed back head phones and can handle high volume levels. Because they're a closed design they have good isolation which comes in handy when recording vocals. Plus they're on sale! They list for 199.00, on sale at musiciansfriend.com for 99.00. I think today is the last day of the sale. Buy online, I got mine!
Good luck and Happy New Year! http://www.audioforums.com/forums/biggrin.gif

One more thing. While placing the order (if you do) type SRAM in the promotion box and you get $25.00 off any purchace over $50.00 making the price only $75.00. Not bad for head phones that list for $199.00! I think that offer ends today also.

I have both the HD200 and HD495 Sennheiser phones. The 495's are better, and more comfortable.
You should be able to find a pair for $70 or less on the net if you search hard.
go here they review and sell thier phones:

Investigate and utilise the AKG 240M phones if you will. I use these to check my mixes and also for playback @ tracking, and they sound superb! Can also handle ear ringing volume before distortion. Great Cans! Oh yeah, they are around $100.00.
