I'd like to buy a secondhand Roland XP-50, but in my part of the world choices are limited. Can someone please suggest an alternative keyboard(from other manufacturers) that offer similar sounds and functions? It's for a project studio and I like the sounds, both piano and synths. On board sequencing isn't necessary, but keys (as against a straight module)are preferable

I'm not sure exactly what you are to use it for, what type of music, but if its piano and synthsounding scapes you're after I would definately recommend an Ensoniq TS-10 or TS-12. I bought a TS-10 myself about a year ago, and its marvellous in those areas. They aren't expensive, I got it for approx 800$, and they have lots of possibilities.
The pianos are very high and packs a very defined treble (something I love, I hate those muffled, low pianostuff on other synths). I use it for all my pianolines and I can also recommend it for really wonderful pads and soundscapes. Its also very easy to download new sounds in it via midi, and take any wav-file and convert it down to the keyboard.
For soundexamples, check out my mp3-site at http://www.mp3.com/weidel and especially listen to Waterfalls. The background, and first thing you hear, constant pad is the TS-10 and more importantly the piano (which I, once again, love the sound of) that comes into play somewhere in the early middle.
The drums on A Lifes Lesson is also from the TS-10.
Another option is the Korg-line of synths, that I personally think resembles the Roland series in terms of soundchoices.
