First of all, I am a newbie, no doubt about that. I’m gleaning bits of info here and there from this website and that website. Just when I think I’ve got most of the basics down, I come across a term or a piece of equipment that I haven’t a clue what it’s for. Are there any good websites with information or glossary’s for newbie’s like me?

Here’s my latest setup.

Already have - PowerMac G4, 533 mhz, 1 Gig RAM, 40 Gig and 60 Gig drives, OS 9.1

Getting – Logic Platinum, Emagic MT/4, basic MIDI controller keyboard, something akin to Rebirth, Reason, Reaktor, etc.

Question – What is a sampler and why do I need one? Am I on the right track? I have pieced together that it is either a piece of hardware or software that holds lots of different premade sounds (piano, flute, drums, etc.) that you can play with your keyboard (sort of like my Soundblaster card had on my PC). This is where you will actually get the instrument sounds to be used in your MIDI recordings. Also, with programs like Reaktor and Logic, you can tweak and customize these sounds, correct?

I know that might sound like a pretty dumb line of questions, but sometimes it’s the little stuff that there’s not much blatant information on that trips me up. Little things like preamps and samplers and plugins still puzzle me. I don’t know what a beginner needs and doesn’t need. Hey, I’m trying hard to learn. Everyone has to start somewhere! Thanks for any help or info you folks could give me. THANKS!

Brent

yr right...a sampler alows you to play any sound on a range of a key board. Reaktor is a modular synthesis program, and doesn't sample. Logic is a sequencer and not a sampler, although you can put audio into it.
i would advise that you play with the samplers on Reason. Remember that reason gear only operates on one channel at a time. So if you want sampling on 5 channels, you need 5 samplers. real gear dosent work like that, so keep that in mind.

reason can teach you a lot, without having to spend tons of cash.
