Hi All,
Please forgive my ignorance but I’ve run across some thing that I’ve never heard of before… has anybody ever heard of a “unlocked cpu” from what I can gather it allows for greater over clocking speeds..
May Jesus bless you
Sincerely,
Bill

Yes, I've definitely heard of such "unlocked" processor chips. From Intel, if you're special and privileged enough to have the right connections with the company, you might be able to obtain "engineering samples" of chips which have the multiplier locks not implemented. In the AMD world, getting your hands on unlocked Athlon XP chips is much easier. I've seen them advertised for sale on several online vendors' web sites. You can also buy kits to do the unlocking of Athlons yourself, by carefully bridging some cut circuit traces on the exterior of the chip's case.... needs a steady hand and a good magnifying glass http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

yes, on the AMD side some processors had their circuits cut so you couldn't change the multipler (you can still clock the bus though). This proved unreliable because it could destroy or damage the chips at the plant so there are also a bunch of AMDs that are already unlocked.
you can indeed rejoin the cut lines with a granite pencil or silver pen.
