Hey everybody , I need an expert answer on this one.
I have 2 sound cards- a pro quality edirol da 2496 and a turtle beach santa cruz sound card . I mainly am using my headphones for monitoring but I also want to be able to hear the edirol output on my speaker system which is connected to the santa cruz sound card. The problem is , I have run out of available external inputs on the santa cruz.
So , I decided to be little creative and connected the edirol da's monitor outs to the internal cd in of the santa cruz- a general cd in jack, common on almost every sound card. I did that by simply connecting the 2 1/4 inch jack cables that run ot of the edirol da's monitor outs to a cd audio cable.
The 1/4 cables are unbalanced(I turns out that the edirol can work with both balanced/unbalanced outputs) so it looks pretty simple. The cd audio has 3 wires - Left channel , right channel and ground. The 2 1/4 jack have a mono channel and ground( as I understand it) . So I connected the left and right channel wires of the cd audio to the two mono channel wires of the two 1/4 inch jack cables(to create a stereo output fot the edirol) and the ground of the cd audo cable to BOTH grounds of the 1/4 inch jack cables.
Well , it works. No buzz, hum , sparks , flames ...nothing, just clean audio.
Still the question remains : Is this safe?
I have some background in eletrical signals but by doing this connection I am entering an unknown ground...( literally http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif.
Some time ago I had a nightmare that I'm actually building up a giant short circuit in my home studio and which is going to cause a massive power blackout in the country....and I'm to blame http://www.audioforums.com/forums/wink.gif !! Now you know the kind of state that wiring troubles can cause..please help me http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif
