View Full Version : Hey, Geeks! I need your help!
I have an old MicroExpress NP3450 PC laptop with a 5400 rpm hard drive. Two questions: (1) If I install a new 7200 rpm Travelstar HD, will it still just operate at 5400 rpm in my machine? (2) The machine is an ATA-33 model, so would that negate the benefits of getting a faster hard drive? Thanks for all replies in advance.
An ata 100/133 7200 rpm drive will run at ata 33 on your old laptop, but should run at 7200 rpm which should give you a little boost.Think of it as a slight improvement that can be used in your next upgrade. The ata issue deals with seek time, not rpm per se.

I'd like to improve my seek time as well as my hard drive speed. Is there a way I can upgrade an ATA-33 machine to improve seek time?

OH BTW you can get a PCI controller card and upgrade your disk access time to 66/100/133 speeds via PCI bus. If that machine does have PCI slots. Is it a combo Legacy slot \ PCI motherboard or just Legacy slots?

It's an old laptop so it's probably not an option. An external USB drive might be if he has on-board USB,then again even if he does it's a good bet that it's not USB 2.0.I think the best bet is to get a new PC/Laptop and not waste $$$ on an old beast.
