I have an SB Live platinum and a delta 44. I'm a total noob when it comes to midi though, never recorded a midi track in my life! (watches everyone run away)

I have no keyboard or anything, but I'm trying to use the software synth in Cubase SX to write midi tracks manually. Everything seems to work fine except that the audio output for my midi tracks only comes out the SB Live.

Isn't there a way to tell the midi to use the delta 44 as an output? It seems strange that both cards are in the same computer but the only way I can hear the audio through my delta is to physically patch a wire from the output of the SB Live, into a preamp and back into the Delta?

When I select the midi track in cubase and click to see the 'outs' available, there is no mention of the delta 44 at all, only the various midi channels of the SB Live (if that makes any sense?!?).

I'm truly lost ... any help you guys can offer to this analog-minded midi-noob would be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks in advance http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

Sorry, but the way cards are built you have to take the line-out of the SBLive and then bring it back into the inputs of the Delta. I used to just take the line-out of the SBLive to the Tape-In of my mixer. Works great.

The other alternative is to use a VSTinstrument that can play soundfonts directly to the Delta. I use Bismark's BS-16 ($50 from http://homepage.mac.com/bismark ) with great success.. even using huge (50+Mb) General Midi soundfonts. Works so well I didn't even put an SBLive in my new DAW when I upgraded.

Another alternative is GigaStudio (very expensive), Halion or VSampler. Personally, I'm saving my pennines for V3 of Vsampler ( www.vsampler3.com (http://www.vsampler3.com) ), 'cause it not only plays soundfonts but AKAI and GigaStudio sample sets at a third the price of Giga....

Thank you Tim!

It's nice to know that I wasn't missing out on some simple control setting, I'm off to get some rca-1/4 adapters right now ... I can't WAIT to hear some piano, keyboards and who knows what else in the mix for a change.

Also, thank you for the other suggestions, a few people have mentioned gigastudio as well, they truly swear by it. For now I'll be taking it slow with what I have though, I'm just happy things are working finally http://www.audioforums.com/forums/wink.gif

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help!

just for giggles, try setting sblive settings to "digital output only".
maudio 'mixer' (piece of crap), settings
at 44.1 sample, DMA at 128, consumer mode
Check that disable control of monitor...by other audio.
you should hear midi stuff from puter without seperate sends out from maudio.
Sblive outs can still be sent to board, as computer midi outs...
call me whacky ...
