Here's the situation:
I have an Asus A7V VIA133 Mobo with a 700 Mhz Athalon chip.(FSB 200?? or 266?? I can't remember) I know I can put up to a 1.2Ghz chip on the board on the extreme high end. I have the cooling fan that is ready for the bigger t-bird CPU. I had the system designed that way when it was built two years ago. Which in computer yrs is about 50 human yrs.
Anyway, I just upgraded my RAM from 128 to 512 not too long ago. Not noticing a difference too much. My main question after all this is...I know CPU power is a good thing..But would the extra 500Mhz really, really help me?? I can get a 1.1 Gig t-bird for about $40. My system is working OK, but since I did build it to upgrade..why not huh? Should I spring for the xtra 500 Mhz??? Would the xtra processor power help move my RAM faster?? BTW, I'm running Win 98SE. Old..yes.. Stable for me at the moment...yes.
Anyway, after all my rambling..any advice/criticism/jokes/etc are welcome. haha

for 40 bucks i would say take it. it's not a lot of money, unless you are really strapped.

if you don't , you are looking for a new board, new ram (possibly) and more expensive processor.

the way i see it is that your computer is never future proof these days, and when the time comes for you to do another serious upgrade you will be looking for a 3ghz processor.

With the amount of serious changes needed you are better of building a new pc and keeping the old one for other use.

I think for 40 bucks the new processor is worth the money without having to change components. damn, you might even get 15-20 bucks for the 700 on ebay!

i know 700mhz seems like nothing these days but i still think it's a decent processor for office/net use.

p.s. you have to tweak 98 to use your 512mb of ram properly.

i don't remember who to do it (been a while) but search the net for increasing performance when you use loads of ram in 98.

Yes. That's 98 but 98se should address it.
hit the Windows Key and Pause to see what version you have.
