Midi From keys to Comp

I am new to the midi world. I was wondering if anyone could help me with hooking up a Syth(Ensoniq TS-12) to my computer's sound card(Audigy). I have the cable and have hooked it up, but have not been able to transmit the keys to programs like Acid and a few others. I basically just need to use the synth as a controller for now. I can usually find the TS-12 in the configuation, but I may be setting it up wrong in either the Synth or the comp. Anyone have any ideas for me?

What about the MIDI channels? Or is the Audigy MIDI port enabled (in control panel/multimedia)?

Sorry, been busy. I do have midi enabled in the Audigy control panel. Maybe it is just the synth, although it should not be a problem.
