Newbie in UK needing help

Hi
Very basic question I'm afraid
OS Windows XP
PC not recognising pre-amp ??
Record deck - connected to pre-amp - connected to line in on PC
Pre-amp appears to be working in that if I connect it to my hi-fi all seems OK.
But no sound from PC when connected - I know I've had this working before but can't remember how :-(
Any help would be appreciated

You need to provide us some more information:
- What kind of preamp is it? With just plain audio in and out sockets or does it have a usb/firewire connection?
- What sound card do you have?
