Hi all! I just got some new gear and im trying to step it up a notch, so to speak. For a while now, i had been stuck at recording in no more than 2 channels at a time. I used Sonar for my mixing and recording...and Reason for some sequencing and instruments. I have an Edirol MIDI controller that i use for Reason, mainly. Hell...its practically useless without one. haha

Anyway...i've recently been turned on to Samplitude by recommendation on this board somewhere - i think by a Sweetwater tech! So i'm still currently using the 30 day trial, but i love it so far, and will most likely buy it. I've been having some difficulty getting Reason to seamlessly work with it as Sonar did, so any advice there would be great. Other than that, ive been able to successfully record through my new (to me) MOTU 2408 MK2.

Next topic...lets not touch on getting that (MOTU) thing all set up right. Sabianq gave me a great How To for this...but i have to do a fresh XP rebuild before im happy anyway. This is just a test run. It works now... at least with samplitude...it sees all 8 tracks with no problems. Both Cubase and Sonar gave me trouble.

Now for the part im a total newbie with.....Wrapping all this up with external MIDI gear. Ive got an Alesis stereo drum machine with a midi port...and an Roland JV 1080 rack synth. Now heres where i THINK my thought process is right. I want my computer to have a MIDI port...to send out midi to the drum machine, and the roland. Then i can use MIDI tracks in Reason to control the external instruments...which play through the MOTU and into Samplitude...

...right?

Help?

Yup
you will need to make sure the outboard gear is set to 'external clock', that way the DAW will control your midi timing.

Ok. wow...cool. I was expecting all kinds of flaws in my thinking.

Any suggestions on a MIDI only card? I've got the MOTU and all....but my stock sound card isnt old enough to have a mu401 gameport on the back. hahah
