Happy New Year!

I was trying to figure out if it is possible to upload wave samples as an
attachment like a photo.
Apparently, the only way to add a wave file is to zip it up and post it,
is it possible for the forums to allow straight wave files?

I understand that there could be copyright conflicts with people uploading
other peoples work and I am aware of size limitations..

however,
It seems to me that since this is an audio site,
it would be natural that a member should be able to upload a sample
in a wave format as long as a few simple rules were adhered to.

rules like,
only original sample recording may be uploaded.
an original recording would be defined as a recording that was
made by a member on his or her own equipment.

in order to keep within in the fair use, i would suggest that only
sample of less than 30 seconds be permitted for upload.

only wave formats like .WAV may be uploaded.
no mp3 or other compressed formats.

the purpose of the upload would be for members who are
having issues with a hum or a buzz to upload a sample to help with problem solving
or for posting samples of high resolution files for evaluation.

I am not suggesting that an upload should be available for people to
market their new song, rather for people with a home recording
setup to submit samples for technical evaluation.

just a thought.
Cheers!

so i was doing some looking for sites that let you upload audio files.

http://www.soundclick.com/

lets you upload MP3 files but the website processes them and renders them very compressed. the final renderings available for download seem to have a lot of compression artifacts.

http://www.archive.org/index.php

this is my favorite so far.
the site lets you upload files up to 2 gig in size and even allows RIFF wave files of any sample rate.
the site will process files into streaming, ogg, and MP3 formats for different types of players.
the original format is also stored.

both sites above have free memberships and different copyright options.

I looked into this, and I think it makes sense as long as it doesn't become a problem with people uploading copyrighted material.

I've turned this on (I think - please try it and send me a PM if it doesn't seem to work).

There is a size limit for ALL attachments, though, and this applies to .WAV files as well, which means this is only useful for a short clip. Attachments must be under 2 MB. For a .WAV file, that means about 25 seconds for a mono sound file at CD quality. 12 seconds for stereo. For longer clips, MP3 format probably makes more sense. There's a 2 MB limit on those, as well, but that will allow for several minutes of audio, depending on the bit rate.

All of these attachments will be somewhat temporary, due to storage space restrictions. We'll go through and purge files that are more than a few months old from time to time.
