Hi,

I recently bought an EMU 1820 off Ebay. Its secondhand but works perfect. I am dabbling in sound design. I come from a 3D graphics background and I do DJ so I have an inkling of audio production understanding, but not 100% sure when it comes to this complicated Patch Mix setup.

I'm trying to record streaming audio from the net. I'll be editing this with Soundforge or Cubase, as they came with the card. I can't seem to get a stream into soundforge at all. Can somebody help me with this? I used total recorder to record the stream, but the audio quality is not as good as what I am getting out of my monitors. I'm recording to PCM 44k, 16bit, but the sound card is set to 48K, perhaps thats the problem?

Id moslty like to capture uncompressed sound directly into either editor...

Thanks

I’ve read that the Emu’s control panel can have a steep learning curve, but I’ve never used it. Basically, the source you want to record goes into the soundcar’s mixer input. On some cards one can bypass the mixer chip, so you may need to set up that side correctly.

Next, you need to record from the mixer, not from a hardware input. Usually that is a choice in the recording application. It is fairly simple with most soundcards. On mine, I just need to select that recording source in the program and make sure the involved mixer inputs and outputs are not muted (they usually are for the way I work, so I have to change them for something like this).

Thanks Andy,

Yeah the EMU patch panel is confusing as hell. I read the manuals several times and did some research online and still having trouble making sense of it. Being an audio newb isn't helping. I can build computers from scratch and all, so its not for lack of technical aptitude.

Thanks for the help. I am aware I need to pipe in the soundboard mix into my recording software, I'm just confused as to how to do that.

(edit)
I could not find a way to record from the mix in any audio editor app... Either I haven't figured my card out, or it just isn't meant to be setup that way. I did buy Wondershare streaming recorder and it worked a charm... I highly recommend it.

try this im not an expert but here goes i use 1820 with cubasevst create a new strip in patchmix then look into host screen and input assignments.the strip should point an arrow to refer to correspondng strip which should come into your wave strip.when you open cubase go into panels then vst inputs make you click the box to turn green of the strip that the sound is coming in and this should allow your sound to come into the cubase mixer.then click on panels and then vst mixer 1 click on enable and then right click the in l/r number with the one that the sound is coming into which will allow u to record it.
