Windows defaults to a lot of background activity. Anti-virus and similar programs also do a great deal if allowed. Automatic updating of many programs can occur (or try to occur) at any time. If too many other processes want CPU time, there is too little left for good audio. Audio must run in real time, if it time shares to much, some audio will be lost. Look up ways to optimize your system for audio.

i should have put in my original message that I have very few programs running. I keep my settings pretty good. System tray only has 3 icons internet connection ... avs....and sound volumn... even if i msconfig and shut down just about everything except what i would need for good sound , i still don't get good sound. when i start playing something it usually plays good for a few seconds then it starts reading hdd (light goes solid and cpu usage hits 100 for what ever music program wmp winamp vlc) This is when it really plays bad , very slow motion like with skipping, then after reading hdd seems to buffer like?? and plays mostly normal
