Has anyone experienced this...or am I doing something wrong;

I'm getting very low volume from a microphone plugged into the audio-in jack (just mono for now) on my Audiophile 2496 card. (I'm trying to add an Audio track via a microphone to Ableton Live). The same thing happens when I plug my guitar into the Audio-in jack. Every other track absolutely drowns it out. The microphone is 270 ohm impedance.

One other question... why do the use an RCA connector for Audio in? All the microphones and guitars I've seen have either small computer style microphone plugs or the 1/4 phono plug.

Thanks

You need a microphone pre-amp to boost the level of your microphone to be useable by the card. The reason the jacks are RCA is because it is looking for line level signals and neither your guitar or you mic are line level signals. The guitar is a bit closer, but still not line.
