Okay, I got it- the M Audio Audiophile 2496. I'm poor, but it's the kind of stress that incites some good creativity.

However: The Audiophile has only RCA outs, and I have an Altec Lansing speaker system, which is configured to plug into the front and rear 1/8" outputs of a surround sound card (namely, my old SB Live).

So, is there some obvious thing I am missing to properly get the use out of my speakers, or am I simply cross-gendering beyond possibility?

Otherwise, I heard that it is possible to get two soundcards working at once, so I figured that I would record with the Audiophile and play with the SB, but it is not recognized by the computer... I have tried device managers and hardware installation wizards, etc. (Win XP), but to no avail.

Help?

Ok first thing you need is an RCA male to stereo 1/8" adapter, found at any Radio Shack.

Windows XP should automatically install a SB Live without any problems. It has it's own built in drivers that work well with it. Pop it in, and let XP do it's thing and don't touch it.

To install the Audiophile, goto www.m-audio.com (http://www.m-audio.com) and download the latest WDM drivers via the links provided. To make things easy, download the file and unzip it into a folder on your desktop. Shut down your computer and install your Audiophile. Windows will detect a multimedia device. Do a manual search for the card and point the wizard to the folder residing on your desktop. That's all you need to do. If you need help, let me know.

I skipped all that, and just went and bought myself a new stereo system (it was the shelf model, so at a discount, plus free 3 speaker set).

Wow, I think this is technically gambling, since I can't get a job until school's out, and I'm scrounging for enough money to eat rice and lentils every day. Wish me luck!
