Hi,
I have the 96/52. I am running 16 Channels in and out of my DM-24. I notice that SPDIF is indicated as one of my Out options. What is SPDIF, and what physical output does it occupy on the card? Also, how does it differ from the lightpipe and what is it used for? I know, that's really four questions. Thanks.

Hi, SPDIF is Sony/Philips Digital Interface. It is a stereo connection that can be transmitted via a SPDIF specific cable. It usually connects to an RCA type input/output, but rather than sending an analog signal, it sends digital. The same format in an optical setting is refered to as TOS-Link and uses an ADAT like connecter and cable, but is still only two channels. SPDIF is just another stereo I/O for your system. Hope this helps.

Just to clarify:
Any standard RCA cable will work. You don't need an "SPDIF specific" cable, but of course it is always advised that you use the best cable you can get, to ensure the integrity of the data.

Yes, any RCA cable will do the job when it comes to carrying SPDIF information... That said, if you need to carry the information over a long distance, I would HIGHLY recommend using the propper stuff-- 75 ohm cable. Just like the video folks use. AES cable should be 110 ohm, but a normal mic cable will also work in a crunch.
