View Full Version : Strange LynxONE problem ??

After all this talk about the LynxONE cards, I have discovered what appears to be a problem with one of my cards. I have two cards in my system, which have worked perfectly for me from day one. The system identifies them as LynxONE 1 and LynxONE 2. For some unknown reason the LynxONE 1 card has developed a "buzz" or slight distortion in the left channel playback only. I have double checked all connections and cables, and they are definitely not the problem. But the problem even gets stranger. I use my LynxONE 1 card for my mixes and mastering monitoring. When I route the whole mix to the LynxONE 2 card the buzz is gone. When I plug the LynxONE 2 card into the same inputs on my Soundcraft M12 mixer (stereo input) there is no buzz. I can basically plug the 2 card into any mixer inputs and there is no buzz. However, the 1 card always buzzes on the left channel when plugged into any of the stereo channel strips. BUT, when I plug the 1 card into a pair of mono strips the buzz is gone??? This is too weird man!! What it indicates to me is that the left channel of the 1 card may be putting out a hotter signal (or something) that is crapping out the stereo mixer inputs, but not the mono mixer inputs. To make sure it is not a gain thing, I have the trim (gain) levels all the way off, and it still buzzes in the stereo strips. The stereo trims start at -10dB and go to +20db, while the mono trims start at +7dB and go to +60dB, but I can't see how this could make any difference, especially since it is only happening on the left D/A converters of the 1 card. At first I thought my left speaker in my 20/20bas was blown, but with further tests realized that it seems to be isolated to that one D/A converter. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to what this could be?

For now I have switched things and do my monitoring through the LynxONE 2 and moved the 1 card to the mono strips, but I sure would like to figure out why this is happening. I have also emailed David at Lynx Studio for his input.

Thanks

TZ

Hi Tim,
I don't know anything about your card, but I'll give you my two cents. It sounds like there might be a grounding problem somewhere. Try physically switching the cards and see if you get the same buzz.

I had a Mic-pre/compressor that was mounted in the same rack as my sound card's breakout box. The Mic-pre wasn't even plugged in into the same strip as my computer was. I had a buzzing sound that was driving me crazy and I couldn't figure out what it was. I took a 1/4" cable and connected the audio out from the mic-pre into one of the inputs of my sound card and VIOLA, the buzzing went away. The mic-pre doesn't even have to be on. The weird thing is that if theres nothing plugged in to the mic-pre I get the buzzing in my sound card. I don't know why this was happening, but grounding problems are weird and can cause one to go bananas. I hope that this helps you in some way and that we're on the right track. If I'm way off base here, I'm sorry. I tried http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif.
