Moved from a rock solid, but long in the tooth PIII system (500MHz with an Asus P3 BX MB, 512 MD PC100 RAM), to a P4-based system that is giving me fits.

The new system:
P4 2.4GHz CPU
512 MB DDR 2100
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro AGP (with dual monitors)
MSI 645 E MAX MB(SiS 645DX chipset)
Delta 66/Omni
Midiman 2x2 USB MIDI
Win 98SE
Dual WD 40 gig HDs

The only change is the MB/CPU. I have reinstalled Win98, made sure that the Delta IRQ is not shared, disabled ACPI and on-board sound, tried the earliest-latest Delta drivers and latest video drivers.

The problem is that Cakewalk Pro Audio hangs. I also installed the Sonar demo and it hangs as well. This is when exiting the program or trying to set up MIDI interfaces.

Should I try a new MB? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'd suspect an incompatibility possibly with the SiS 645 chipset. See if you could trade the mobo for one with the Intel 845[whatever letter] chipset... perhaps an MSI 845G Max.

I just bought one to build my sister a pc for xmas and it's quite an impressive mobo for only $81, you'd want to leave the integrated video turned off however, for your Radeon video card instead.

EDIT: I just checked price of the MSI 845G Max and it looks like they've gone up in price on average about $10-12 since I bought mine two weeks ago. :-(

Thanks Nick D, I'll probably pick up an Intel 845PE or 845E if further tweaking doesn't do it.

if the mobo/cpu are the only new things it indeed looks like it must be the mobo.
have you installed exactly the same drivers as you had installed on your previous system? otherwise that could also be it...
