Mic recording too quiet

My microphone recordings are barely audible even with the volume on the recording control set to max.
I have tried a different microphone, a different soundcard, and tried both on a different os ( I've tried both XP and w2k). Nothing so far has made any difference.

Any suggestions?

Can you give some more specifics about your setup? What kind (brand/model) of mic are you using? What are you plugging it into? Does your mic require amplification?
