Updating Ableton

I have not even been able to play with my new toys properly yet because I have had to play the Updating Game.
I patched Ableton to version 6.10, and now somehow all my Live Packs (that is the whole EIC) have disappeared. I'm having to install them off the CD again, which is extremely tedious. I also had to uninstall the old version first. The whole thing was a bit of an ordeal.

What I want to know is, is there any way of circumventing this for future updates? I would like to update Ableton like how any other product updates, a program that runs, you point it to the right folder, and it updates all the files while your setting stay the same. Ableton is pretty much the only software I have come across that does not follow this updating paradigm.

Oh, ps, on the disc there is a Live Pack in the EIC folder marked 'draft'. I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to install this, or whether it was an early, well, draft, of the EIC that found its way onto the disc somehow and is of no use to me. Which?

Normal with Live the updates get installed in different folders so there is no need to remove. I think what happened is removing the previous version also removed all your Live config info on the packs which is why you had to re-install them. I never had that issue before so not sure what to suggest.

But surely if I install the new version of Live in another folder (which was the root of my problem it turns out) I will then have two copies of Live on my system! That can't be right?

Thats how it always worked for me that there was multiple copies of Live living side by side in harmony. At least on my computer. It was very odd and I could take some guesses at why it was done that way but who really knows.

Maybe I was doing it wrong but I would just go with the default settings on the installs except I put my Live folder on a different drive

And each update retained your old settings and packs? I will have to give this some thought. Thing is I am thinking too much at the moment because I have Kontakt, Absynth and Reaktor to think about all at once. They are confusing things.
