View Full Version : Digital Mixers & PCs help (Tascam, Roland, etc.)

I am thinking of getting a digital mixer for my band. So far the 2 that I have found in my price range are the Tascam TM-D1000 and the Roland VM-3100Pro (studio package).

Being more of an analogue person, I am trying to figure out exactly how these work for my needs.

I need one for two basic purposes:

1) A mixer for our PA system. I want to input digital/MIDI drums, keybaords, vocals, and run them out to the PA. I think that this is simple enough and both of these mixers can do this, can't they?

2) I want to use it for recording. I do NOT want to record and do everything IN the mixer! I want to get my inputs into the mixer, maybe do some EQ tweaks, run an outboard compressor (maybe), and then run all of the channels into a PC running either Smaplitude, Cubase SX or NuEndo. I want each track to import to the PC individually. I do not want JUST a stereo output from the mixer into the PC if at all possible.

Can both of these do this? Is there another competing product in the same price range that I should be looking at?

From what I have been reading, it *seems* like the Tascam can only do a single stereo out into the PC. If it can dump all 8 or 16 tracks simultaneously into the PC, how does it do it? Just through a digital interface? If so, what is the cheapest and best bet for a digital interface for the PC so that I can get all of my tracks imported into corresponding tracks in my audio software?

The Roalnd Studio package comes with the Roland RPC (?) card which is a PC interface. Am I correct in thinking that this will do exactly what I described above? Will this dump all 8 or 16 tracks into my PC? It comes with a version of Logic Audio, but I have no clue how to use that. I would rather stick with NuEndo or Samplitude if possible on the PC.

Thanks,
