I saw a sale online somewhere that has a blemished (Not sure what the blemish is or where it is on the unit) Mackie Control Universal for $500 (reg $600). Then I looked to check if Sweetwater had one but they didn't, which suprised me. Then I figured out why, their is a new version which is labeled as "Mackie Control Universal Pro" (which Sweetwater does have). But this new version costs $1200. Twice as much! I've been thinking about getting a midi control surface because it's so slow doing everything with the mouse even with using keyboard shortcuts. I feel more like a programer then a musician sometimes because of it.

I like this because it has some features I really want in a control surface but is usually over $1000. Things such as the digital screen that shows the label names of the tracks, long throw motorized faders (this way you don't have to use a rotary, or lose/catch position when moving a normal fader). Over the years I've seen some companies try to make some more affordable similar types but they still end up being over a grand.

So anyway, for $500 it seems like a good deal to take advantage of if it's a minor blemish. The reviews seems good. I know some people will suggest one of the $200-300 midi control surfaces but I find some of the features on this very helpful and not to mention as one reviewer said, it looks professional and helps clients take you more seriously when they see it.

So is this $500, $600 version a discontinued product now? Anyone have any info on them?

The original MCU was discontinued in favor of the MCU Pro. The new generation is the major reason for the price difference. However, I've never actually used either, so I can't really give you "hands-on" advice.

I see. I guess I"ll just stick with my first choice I was thinking of getting then. One of the Novation ReMotes. They have a digital readout on the channels as well.
