View Full Version : Clueless on Amps and Subs..help??

heyy okay i feel pretty stupid for asking this..but i just got a car with the crappiest system ever! the speakers are blown and the system is like anchient..i want to get a really really good and loud system..i want the bass to be soo loud that my mirrors shake.. haha even thou thats like illegal but anyways!..i have not idea wat to get. or what the difference between a sub and amp is and i was just gonna have a friend come with me to pick everything all out for me and hook it up..but does anybody suggest anything?? and how much its all gonna cost??

I don't think you will find a lot of car audio folks here although I may be wrong. Most of the topics here are studio, live sound and recording related.

I took my van to a Car Toys and let them do it. And I have no idea what they did, but it sounds nice.

pretty cool this forum has gotten so wide spread we are getting "car audio" people wanting to know answers...my son has a system in his Explorer, I lasted 2 seconds sitting in there...no way. LOL

By the way, in answer to your initial question, there is a difference between a sub and an amp, whether in car audio, home theaters, or pro audio. A subwoofer is generally any speaker which is specifically designed and intended to reproduce only low frequency information. An amplifier is an electronic device which increases the voltage of an electrical signal such that it can drive a speaker. To make a subwoofer (or any speaker, for that matter) work, you need an amp.

Now, the way this works in car audio is very different from the world I'm familiar with, pro audio. But the fundamental concepts behind it are the same.
