i built a new computer using a supermicro X7DA3 motherboard

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/5000X/X7DA3.cfm

and windows XP professional x64 edition

first i tried using my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card but it did not physically fit into the motherboard because the PCI-X slots are keyed for a different voltage than this ancient soundcard and the only plain PCI slot i have on the mobo is blocked by the double wide graphics card.

then i tried my E-MU 1212M soundcard. it fit into the PCI-X slot and i found the correct driver for xp x64 ... it even worked ! ... except that when playing music or video the computer would CRASH every half an hour or so

so now what ? the next logical candidate is M-Audio Audiophile 192 ... can anybody tell me if it would work under my OS ?

or can anybody suggest another souncard under $200 that will work under XP x64 and have good sound quality on digital output ?

IMHO, don't go to WinXP64 or Vista at this point...stick with Windows XP 32-bit if you want everything to talk and work together properly.

i agree with you 100% but i wanted this to be a high performance machine ( not just for audio ) so i installed 4 gigs of ram and 64 bit OS

if i go back to 32 bit i will lose about 0.8 gig of ram and also some CPU performance due to not being able to use some of the enhancements of the x64 architecture

IF POSSIBLE i would prefer to keep 64 bit ...

The E-MU does...I would not readily assume that the cause to your problem is the EMU/x64 combo. Are you running with any VSTi's when the crashes occur?
I would also assume that you won't fair any better with the 192.
Also....what graphics card are you running with that you cannot use the only standard PCI slot you have?

Since the E-mu card works in that slot, I'd assume that's not your issue. Have you checked resources for sharing?

basically with the sound card in, the computer crashes usually within half hour of playing video or music.

with soundcard taken out of the box the computer doesnt crash.

the only thing i installed was the driver and patchmix dsp application ... nothing else except winamp, windows media player and media player classic was installed.

i havent really looked into the resources yet but if there was a problem wouldnt it NOT work at all instead of periodically crashing ?

the mobo has an integrated soundcard ... do you think i should try to disable it in bios ( although i do not recall seeing such an option ) ?

are you saying you know someody who uses E-MU in XP x64 without problems ?

only one slot on the mobo is Pci-E X16 and it is directly next to the only PCI slot and the graphics card is 8800GTS which occupies two slots. i was using the EMU in the pci-X slot instead ... and it was working except for the crashing part.

any more pointers ?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Not necessarily, sharing an IRQ does not mean that you would see the card not working at all, but it could lead to the problem you describe.

Yes, check your resources, particularly those for your graphics and audio cards.
That's a serious GPU setup you've got there! Definately takes up quite a bit of bandwidth....you may want to consider trying to set up another user account for your DAW and kill all graphics acceleration and visual enhancements on that account.
What power supply are you using?
