Since this isn't a review of gear, I'm going to move this thread out of the gear review forum...

sorry to say,
a thousand bucks ain't gonna buy you much.
i would suggest getting one used on eBay or Craigslist.com.
the only thing 1000 bucks might get you is a decent AMP/Loud speaker system.
then you have to buy a mixer and cables, and a couple of microphones (you should have at least one wireless).
and i always suggest getting the best gear as the bigger names will last longer, are more road worthy, and have a higher resale value.
names like MACKIE, QSC, NADY, CROWN, SHURE or TECHNICS.
then you need ATA road cases like Anvil or Calzone.
im sure others will chime in on the Pro gear they use.

ditto on a 1000 bucks won't get too much but take a look at numark and american audio for cd players they are reasonable priced and you can find them on ebay sweetwater probaly also carries them .
they won't break the bank and will do the job Icurrently use a set of american audio cd players they have held up well they replaced my stanton 550s look around for mixers on sale stanton is ok but numark has some pretty decent stuff.
I started with an old radioshack ssm1200 ( don't laugh it made me a few dollars) I had hanging around not fancy but it worked until I could afford to upgrade
for my rack gear i use a furman power conditioner absolute must have they will save your gear and well worth the money you spend on it
I have a stanton mixer I use strictly for dj gigs purchased it on a close out it does a fine job the faders could be better but for what i paid for it its ok
I run a set of the american audio cd players by american dj,they get the job done and have features on them of some more expensive players but if you can get yourself a set of the numarks
I also run a bbe maxcom in my system these are great little units you can use it as a limiter , compressor, etc
as far as mics I currently run a vhf wireless by audio technica Iwould recommend you purchase a uhf frequency adjustable wireless mic
I am in the process of upgrading it soon as finish up my foh PA gear
purchases
if you are on a budget you can get a single channel vhf for about 100.00 used shouldn't be too bad look around there out there
as far as the pa system goes it depends on what you want
the gigs i do I use my carvin pa 620 it consists of a 200 watt 6 ch head (amp ) and two 12in speakers it has great performance is easy to set up and take down there are other systems out there that will fill the bill this sytem fits my needs and the venues i work
total investment without lighting was about 3k and a word about that if you are planning to buy effects lights checkout lights by martin they are expensive but you get what you pay for they are the only lights I will buy
trust me on this one i went the other route with another brand
options check out used gear in your area just know who you are dealing
with
hope this helps
