Jeff's thoughts on this...

This thing is cool. It comes with vinyl LP's that are encoded with a 2 khz sine wave and time code. You hook up your turntable's output to the included audio interface, and you can control the playback of your digital files from real vinyl. The tracking is dead-on, and you can do with MP3's pretty much anything you could normally do with vinyl.

Everything that's cool about the "digital DJ" combined with the old-school vinyl way of doing things.

Don't forget, the new system goes into place this month. Each post counts for one entry in the drawing. The more you post, the greater your chances of winning!

So the computer reads the output of the turntable, and alters the digital file according to the distance from 2kHz it is?

I'm impressed. That's a really clever, intuitive way of controlling digital files with a turntable.
Can you use DSP effects and that on it? Because otherwise there doesn't really seem to be any big advantage to this.

It has some other cool tricks too. If you flip the record over, it will advance your playlist to the next track. There's a special "control track" close to the spindle on each record that lets you turn the LP like the scroll wheel on an iPod to scroll through your playlist.

And that's just the records. The software rocks all on its own. Traktor is a DJ's best friend. It comes with CDs also for people who use dual-deck DJ CDE players, but the vinyl thing is much cooler.

Yes, and yes, by the way. When you "scratch" the record, the since wave will spike up much higher than 2 khz, and dip much lower as the record moves back and forth under the stylus. The software follows these frequency fluctuations and does likewise with your mp3 (or .wav, .aac, whatever) files.

And there are a host of included DSP effects.

Tomorrow morning, first thing when I get into the office. We use a random number generator to pick a post number from the last month. And the person responsible for that post (assuming he/she is eligible, according to the rules) wins.
