I have an Audiophile 2496 soundcard,
p4 1.6 GHz
Win XP with ACPI disabled
SONAR 2.1 XL

everything works swimmingly

added a Johnson J-station (virtual amp, akin to the Line 6 POD but with S/PDIF connection too). Downloaded the latest operating system for the J-station, and ran the "Updater" program, which first clears the old operating system from teh J-station, before it downloads the new operating system. All this is done via the MIDI connections in teh J-station connected to the 2496 card.

The connection will not work, ie there is some resource conflict and the MIDI communication times out. I have never connected any other MIDI device to my computer, so I don't know for sure if the whole thing ever did work. However, before I ran the updater to get the new version of the J-station firmware, it operated the old version from my PC just fine. Granted, the level of MIDI transfer that worked was quite simple, just changing a few parameters, senmding small packets of data back and forth. The operating system transfer is a 2-3 MB transfer and won't work.

I have been on the phone with Johnson tech support, and tried their fixes, which haven't worked. The only one I haven't tried is moving my soundcard to a new slot, which they say may resolve the problem, but after months to get my system tweaked so it worked, I am loathe to change anything...

any ideas at all?

one more idea / question: maybe I should try to get a MIDI-to-USB adapter and hook up the J-station to my USB ports and bypass the soundcard altogether?

problem solved. If anyone here ever purchases a Johnson J-station, and runs Windows XP, note that the Updater program will not work ... but it works out of any other Windows platform. The rest of the J-station works fine under Win XP, you just can't update the operating system from it.

cstockdale,
I have the j station and am using windows XP.I had trouble using the updater too. The
help file section that says "I still can't
get a download to start" fix worked for me. It envolves turning off the j station, quitting the updater app, starting the app, selecting the midi in and out (even if they are already selected),pressing the"select version" button, clicking "open", then quickly turning on the j station. After a couple of tries(the j
station is on the other side of the room)it worked just fine. Try it if you like, the exact instructions are in one of the help files.

ACPI is a new way of partitioning IRQ ports in computers, and works great for nearly everything except recording audio, as it assigns "virtual" IRQ ports instead of fixing locations, sometimes you end up with conflicts..

Other than that, as per your question, if you have the SONAR manual, read it. Or use the help file and go through the tutorials. Your question is mighty vague, and learning to run a DAW (digital audio workstation) takes time and patience. You're not going to turn out a hit single over the weekend.
