I have Ableton LIVE 6 with all the plug ins (Operator, Sampler, EIC) and am pretty familar with it, the MIDI capabilites are great on Live. Now, just recently I got the full version of Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3, since I find it a lot easier for mixing and recording purposes.

Now, part of the reason I decided to get Pro Tools in addition to Live, was that I saw that you can 'ReWire' it for Ableton Live.

"ReWire for Ableton Live
Fans of Ableton Live will love Pro Tools M-Powered's ability to accept Live's output via ReWire for further mixing and processing. You get the best of both worlds - Ableton Live's incredibly fluid real-time writing, production and remixing environment along with the industry standard in tracking, editing and mixing."

My question is, what is this whole ReWiring concept? Whats is its purpose and how do you manipulate it? Thank you all so much.

Rewire is for sending audio between 2 applications.
It was made by Propellerhead.
find out more: http://www.propellerheads.se/ under Technologies.

I use Rewire a lot, Reason to Cubase and Melodyne to Cubase and mostly both at the same time. I also have a Live LE i can rewire, but have not got used to it yet.

The rewired program (eg Live from Pro Tools) acts like a slave.
The main way of manipulate, is how you set up audiochannels.
Mostly i use 8 mono channels from Reason to Cubase and 8 from Melodyne to Cubase.
The standar is to transfere a mix from slave to master, but it's a matter of taste (and where you want to add effects)

Alright, I see it just transfers audio from one program to the next. I downloaded ReWire 1.7. So should I be able to open both PT and Live at the same time and work on the same audio, or seperate. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

It's the industry standard for linking two standalone programs.

I ReWire Reason to Cubase a lot since Cubase fills the holes Reason leaves open. I can send MIDI recorded and manipulated in Cubase to Reason's devices in real-time. Audio from Reason's devices goes back out to Cubase for VST effects, mixing with recorded audio, and so on (two functions Reason doesn't offer).

Put simply, ReWire locks two software devices together with sample-accuracy to rout MIDI from one to the other and audio back.
