Hi.
i have just been asked to make a dvd for a string quartet. i'm using a mini DV camera to film it and pro tools to do a stereo recording. if i align the two within pro tools or imovie will they syncronise or will they occasionally drift? someone told me that i will need a digital clock to synronise both aspects while recording it, is this true?
thanks

Good question. If you can put time code in the video, when you import it into PT, you can see if there is drift at key spots. I suspect there will be some drift, but maybe not enough to be noticable.
I would think that if you set your video to 24fps and PT to 24fps and record them both at the same time, you should be able to have a pretty close sync.
It is a good question.
I've worked with surround sound productions in Cubase - and I never been presented with an ultimate/digital sync need.
Granted, when you work things will shift, but that'll probably be one self meddling. To sum up: Never had a problem with it in Cubase, but that doesn't mean it can't occur. Never tried it in ProTools.
I don't believe it to be true - pro software like Cubase and ProTools should keep it inline. Especially if you, like Dave says, keep fps and the likes the same on both ends. But again, I've never had to keep tracks of audiovisual productions larger than 15 minutes.

Video is recorded at 48kHz sample rate.
If you recorded the audio at 44.1kHz, yeah you'll see drift between the two....
