My band, Bella Morte, is currently a four piece:
Vocalist, Guitarist, Bassist/general tech (that's me), and "light engineer/start stop guy/occasional lead synth player".
Until now we have primarily been running pre-programmed sequences from our laptop and synth workstations and just playing along. We are losing our light engineer/jack of all trades and are replacing him with a live synth player and a live drummer (who will still be following a click track most of the time) in order to develop our stage show. Now for the problems.
The meat of our new rig:
Korg N364 or possibly a Waldorf Q
Roland v-drums concert kit
Digital Performer 3.0
Reason 2.0
Macintosh iBook 500mhz 384 mb ram
Edirol UM-1S USB MIDI I/O (used mainly for composition)
griffin technologies iMic USB audio I/O (I know there isn't much to it, but it's better than the headphone jack)
2 pocket scans and about 15 various other lights so far.
DIGI-001 and ProTools LE(I understand that this probably won't work due to no PCI slots in the iBook, it's really a part of my home studio, but thought I'd throw it in for honorable mention)
here is what I'm trying to do:
1. Convert all pre-programmed sequences to .aiff format audio (easy enough using the DIGI-001).
2. Load the .aiff files into DP3, and using a decent audio interface (any suggestions?) send a stereo main signal to the house, a stereo submix with click track to the drummer, and a custom stereo submix to our keyboardist. I had intended to use a MOTU 828 or 896 until I realized they didn't have MIDI capabilities.
3. Using the .aiff files as reference and DP3s MIDI capabilities, hook up a high quality multiple output MIDI interface and MIDI Dimmer packs (at lest one with DMX capabilities) and design a custom light show. The dimmer packs in this phase are still just an idea (though I believe necessary). If any one knows of a more efficient and cost effective way to run a MIDI slaved light show, please let me know.
3.Using the v-drums, trigger all of our custom drum samples in Reason in realtime (so far the latency we've come across is tremendous).
4.And using the Q or N364, occasionaly trigger the Reason synths.
What I'm looking for from anyone with knowledge on the subject are opinions on good MIDI dimmer packs for lighting, good very low latency audio/MIDI interfaces that I can use with the iBook or, if there isn't such a thing, a possible alternative way to utilize our samples and software synths live (we've been toying with the idea of a Titanium 1ghz, but I'm not certain if that will fix any of the problems). And most importantly, a general idea of how to keep everything sync'd up without stalls, stutters or lag.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My thanks,
Gopal
