Pretty basic this but always bugged me.

How much influence on signal routing e.t.c. does the Sounds and A devices box in Control Panel have?

My main seqencer is Samplitude but I have other things such as Notataion2, Sibelius(demo, I'm not wealthy!) and other bits and pieces.

All these programs have Device Selection/order in one form or another.
Do these progs override the setting in Control Panel?

Just to confuse matters further I run a 2496 card and a usb interface, normally without problems. (XP pro).
Dave.

not entirely sure of what you are asking

different applications will have different approaches

apps that do not recorded direct to disc will all pretty much be GUI's for standard windows api (i.e. actual recording is handled by OS)

Direct to disk apps might bypass OS but to what extent is largely proprietary

on another tack the Windows propensity for resetting sampling rates based on triggering internal sounds has long been more then an irritant that and other OS overhead is one reason why various hardware manufacturers developed various kernel streaming (sidestepping OS entirely, at least in theory) protocols and is at the heart of ASIO's broad acceptance

Hi oretez. No, I'm not entirely sure either! To give an example;

I can set up The Box such that m-audio is record and playback device, go into Samplitude and, as I would expect, record and play using the 2496. But, I can then select in Sam8 my usb interface (BCA2000,- 3-4,-5,6-7,8) and this works fine as well.
Did I need to set anything up in contol panel at all?

I think you have given me your best shot and it is one I always suspected,"it all depends......"

Many thanks
Dave
