I just built a new home system and decided to set up my cakewalk and layla on it. I had all of this on my old system, but on my old system, I used the layla as both the input and output. On this system, I'm severly limited in space, so I can't use the layla output because I'd have to run that to a power amp and into my monitors which as I said, I just don't have space for. So, I figured I'd use the layla as the recording source and set up my onboard sound card as the output source.

I expected that when I'd play something on my guitar, I'd hear it through the speakers connected to my onboard card, but I don't hear anything. And I've checked all of my settings in the audio control panel to make sure nothing is muted. Everything is turned on full bore. I then opened cakewalk and by looking at the monitor view, I can see that the pc is getting plenty of signal. I recorded a small section and when I play it back, voila, there it is.

So, the computer is getting signal, but the onboard card doesn't want to play back the sound that it's receiving from the other card. Has anyone run into anything similar or have any ideas what I could try? Thanks.

You didn't say how you have the 2 cards connected....

I have had the same problem with Layla and my Sound Blaster. Before i got some decent speaker i just used the SB as the output card. The only way you can monitor the inputs from layla using the sb outputs is to connect the outputs of layla to the sb inputs. You cannot route the signal directly from layle to sb. There is a program called virtual audio cable or something similar. I am not sure what it does but it sounds interesting and might be usefull to you in this situation.
