Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an Edirol UM-3EX USB MIDI interface to get my Roland MT-32 and Roland SC-55mkII working in DOSBox with my old computer games. Everything works great in Windows XP: I can switch between the MT-32 and SC-55 in the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties under MIDI Music Playback. My question is, will everything still work in Windows Vista x64?

I see that Roland offers Vista x64 drivers for the UM-3EX at http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/dld.cfm?ln=en&dsp=0&iCncd=840, but I have heard that the audio stack is radically changed in Vista and am worried that the MT-32 and SC-55 will no longer work, even with the UM-3EX, because there will not be anywhere in Vista to select a default MIDI device. The readme on the Vista x64 driver seems to say that MIDI won't work with Windows Media Player: "In the Windows Media Player, the MIDI input/output device of UM-3 cannot be used. Please select the following device in your MIDI compatible application." Since DOSBox uses the default MIDI device just as WMP does (I think), is there going to be a problem with DOSBox too?

So, will the UM-3EX Vista driver make everything work fine, or is MIDI completely screwed up in Vista?

Sorry for the delay on this. It appears that each application will need its own MIDI output settings. The help file is correct; WMP does not have the option to select a MIDI output device. When it plays a MIDI file, it uses its own internal synth to generate sound. The only way to use your outboard gear is to select the UM-3EX directly in your apllication (in your case, DOSBox). Provided DOSBox allows this, then yes, everything would work fine.

I've posted a solution here (http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-hardware-devices/198797-assigning-midi-devices.html) (Vista 32 but should work under x64)
